2023 Annual Fall Meeting Notes

The Buckeye Wrestling Association (BWA) is accepting member clubs for the 2023-24 wrestling season.  As part of the annual Fall meeting on 9/17/23 (link to recording) we talked through moving forward with the season noting with currently five divisions and looking to expand.

The BWA provides a structure for interclub competition and a league championship tournament.  The BWA is the premier youth wrestling league providing opportunities for new wrestlers to get experience and competition, and flexibility for experienced wrestlers to be able to get better competition.  Participating clubs and individuals must follow BWA league rules to qualify for the BWA League Championship to be held on February 18, 2023. 

Members passed the following motions for the 2023-24 season:

  1. Election of President is still outstanding

  2. Re-election of Secratary: DJ Vondruska

  3. Election of Treasurer: still vacant

  4. Election of of new Tournament Director: John Burd (Austintown Fitch)

  5. Keep the 44 minimum with no growth allowance

Key BWA dates for the year:

  • Joining deadline: October 15th

  • First Competition: Dec 3rd

  • Sectionals: Feb 4th or 11th

  • League Championships: Feb 18th (Austintown Fitch HS)

Reminder that all member clubs can begin practice after September 1, 2023 once they have their USA Wrestling Club Charter and individual “Limited Folkstyle” cards.  Intraclub competition can begin December 3, 2023, with BWA League Championship Qualifiers being held as early as February 4, 2023.

An Ohio youth wrestling League, the Buckeye Wrestling Associate, or “BWA” shall be founded to better promote the historic sport of wrestling.  The BWA and its member clubs aim to aid in the physical development of all participating youth, and to promote good sportsmanship, community pride, and spirit as an integral and important part of the overall athletic and mental skills of the participants.
